about us.
Build Functional Fitness was created to bring accessible group training to North Shields, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and the surrounding areas. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have been training for a lifetime, workouts are scaled to meet your current fitness levels to provide a safe and meaningful workout that will translate into your everyday life.
We are a private training facility with a wide range of high-end equipment, from SkiErgs and Squat Racks to Sled, ensuring our members get the best quality and varied workout every session.
Simply put, we want to give you the tools to get you fitter, stronger and moving better. All while being in an inclusive, fun and encouraging environment.
In 2014, I nervously began my career by walking a commercial gym floor as a 1-1 personal trainer. I quickly realised that this was more than just a job for me, and I have dedicated my life to it ever since.
After working in two big-name gyms, I moved to a private facility coaching group sessions alongside personal training, and a new passion was found. In 2022, an opportunity arose to take over the gym. Fast forward a year of refurbishments and rebranding, and Build Functional Fitness was born.
My specialisation lies in strength and hypertrophy. These types of training are what made me fall in love with fitness and styles that I have used to help hundreds of men and women achieve their goals. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a big cardio session now and again!
Outside the gym, you’ll find me keeping active along the coast, walking, running or paddle boarding.
Paul Oakes.
Eleven years ago, I was 14 stone and very unfit, so I decided to do something about it. I lost over four stone and found a love and passion for fitness and exercise.
After having my second son, I was due to return to work. I realised I didn’t want to be away from my family and sat at a desk for 12 hours a day, so I qualified as a gym instructor in 2016 and have never looked back.
I specialise in group exercise and have worked within two well-known gyms in the local area from 2016 to the present day. My favourite training styles are HIIT and cardio workouts.
Outside the gym, I enjoy running, cold water therapy, hot yoga, sports massage treatments, taking my son to watch Newcastle United and spending time with my family.
